I Should specify — we are still finalizing the agreement. The horse hasn’t gone out yet. So the agreed upon percentage will be in the lease.

Phil Wiskell asked:

Anyone looking through a list of horses for sale needs to have a strong sense of what they are looking to buy. When buying horses in Texas, or anywhere else, most people are going to find right off the bat that they are not just looking for “a brown horse,” they are going to be looking for horses that will serve a particular purpose.

Cattle Horses

When some people look to buy horses, it is because they have a ranch and they need to have a horse that will allow them to keep up with a herd of cattle. Other people still view horses as an inexpensive mode of transportation that will enable them to move from one place to another with relative ease, despite the surrounding terrain. In other cases, people will be shopping for horses that will be workers - that will help to keep the herd together, move supplies, or even help pull the truck out of the mud.

In most cases, ranchers looking for a new horse will turn to American Quarter Horses, because they are well suited to the work. With strong hind legs, athletic bodies, speed and flexibility, American Quarter horses allow ranchers to get the job done every time, quickly and efficiently.

Rodeo Horses

Many people who are looking to buy horses are doing so because they are drawn to the competitive rodeo arena. Whether their goals include calf roping, barrel racing or steer wrestling, they know that the horses that they select need to be able to sustain fast speeds, be maneuverable and responsive to the rider.

In most cases, those individuals who are looking for rodeo horses are also going to be turning towards the American Quarter Horse, when they are shopping for a good horse. The reason for this is very much the same as the reasons that motivate buyers looking for ranch horses: American Quarter Horses have the necessary speed and athleticism to excel.

Horses for the Family

While those who have ranches and those who ride in rodeo events often have kids, they know that their horses may not be the most suitable horses for young, inexperienced riders. Therefore, plenty of riders look for horses that will be good for casual rides and for all members of the family.

Not surprisingly, many of them also gravitate towards the American Quarter Horse; however in this case, they often look towards older horses and those who have not been trained to participate in more competitive events.

Characteristics Of A Good Horse

In all cases, however, those who are looking for horses recognize that there are some characteristics that they absolutely do not want in a horse. They do not want to purchase a bad tempered horse that tends to bite or kick. They don’t want to make an investment in horses that have not been broken - especially when buying a horse for the family.

Most importantly, when looking for horses anywhere in the world, even in Texas or Oklahoma, the most crucial element that they are looking for a horse that is in good health. The horse’s hooves should be healthy. Its legs should be muscular and strong and should be free from scars and bulges. Similarly, the horse’s hearing and eyesight, teeth and heart should be in great condition.

Finally, people who are shopping for horses will want to find a horse that is a good fit for them. In part, this is a measure of the height and weight of the horse. In part it’s simply a determination that the horse is responsive, and is comfortable when you ride.

Texans Know Their Horses

It may be a common belief that everyone in Texas is familiar with horses, but those who are looking for horses in Texas know that this simply isn’t true. Like everywhere else, people have different experiences with horses. The horses for sale that they see listed will also have different experiences. Some will have training for particular tasks; others will be better suited for kids. Some will be athletes, born and bred, while others will be geared for work, or standing around in a pasture all day long.

When buying horses in Texas, or anywhere else, it is important to take the time to ask questions about the horse’s lineage - particularly if you are looking for a horse that can enable you to participate in rodeo competition. Understand that the look of the horse is less important than the horse’s demeanor and strength, and make a wise and educated choice.

draft sport horse

Chris Tischer asked:

Whether you’ve got a pony for the kids, or a full-blooded Arabian, getting the animal to do what you want and need it to do is the most important thing for all concerned. An untrained horse makes for an unsafe horse, and an unsafe horse makes for unhappy owners. Ideally, training should begin as soon as possible, but if you aren’t able to begin training your horse until it is older, don’t despair. You can still have a well-behaved, well-mannered, rideable horse.

Begin by simply letting your horse know that you aren’t afraid of it or nervous around it. Appearing calm and decisive will go a long way to gaining your horse’s trust and confidence. Simply walk around the corral or pen, or walk through the stable, as if it were the most natural thing in the world for you to do. Check the feed and water troughs or buckets. Get your horse used to seeing you in his space. He will soon come to accept that you share his world and that you are alright to have around. Don’t try to catch or even touch the horse unless he approaches you. If you’ve got a friendly horse, he’ll take to you easier and sooner than one who is suspicious or skittish of people.

After your horse is used to having you around, you can begin training. One of the most important things you can train your horse to do is to walk beside you on a lead. In order to train to a lead, your horse has to be used to wearing a halter. If he isn’t halter trained, start out slow and small. Spend 15 minutes holding it in front of him, letting him sniff and even taste the halter. Once he gets used to the sight of the halter in front of him, move it over his head. Just hold the halter above him – don’t try to put it on yet. He may shy away at first, but he’ll get used to it soon enough. Again, work for 15 minutes or so at a time. Never train your horse past his tolerance level. Tired or frustrated horses don’t learn anything, and depending on their personalities, can become dangerous when fatigued or bored. Once your horse is accustomed to seeing you with the halter near his head, put it on. You may only get it over his nose the first few times and that’s alright. Again, he’s got to become comfortable with the idea, as well as the item, that you are presenting. Once he gets it on, only leave the halter on for 10 to 15 minutes at a time for the first few times. He may try to toss his head or rub or paw at the halter. Once he becomes comfortable with the halter on, then you can leave it on if you choose. Coming at a horse with a halter, slamming it over his head and then forcing him to wear it can build an attitude of resentment toward you, and an atmosphere of mistrust on the part of your horse. Slow and steady training, with careful, calm voice and movements, will win over rough or rowdy any day.

The next step is lead training. This is best done with a long lead. As with the halter, take things slow and easy. Let the horse sniff the lead before you use it. Clip it to his halter and let it hang down, so he can feel the weight of it. Try to get him to walk toward you without pulling on the lead to start. Do this with a favorite treat or a handful of hay. Once he begins to step toward you, tighten the lead so that he acquaints the tug of the lead with moving. Stop after 15 to 20 minutes. Once he is comfortable walking with the lead, come back beside him. Take a step and tug the lead. Take another step and tug again. He will quickly learn that he walks when you walk. If he doesn’t like to stop when you stop, try placing your hand in front of his nose and tugging the lead backward. You can add a verbal command if you like, but it is not necessary.

Your horse will need to learn to tolerate being touched all over. Certain body areas are more sensitive than others and horses will naturally shy or become defensive when touched in those areas. Start by giving a positive, pleasing touch with on hand while the other hand moves to an area of discomfort. The horse will soon get used to the feel of a hand on his ear, muzzle or chest and will no longer bite, kick or shy away. He’ll learn to trust you with his body, making vet care, hoof care, grooming, as well as saddle training and other types of training easier and more pleasant for all involved.

Poorly trained horses will often pull or whinny and fuss when tied. One way to train a horse to stand quietly while tied is to first just stand beside him and not move. He’ll most likely be used to walking beside you. Standing still may confuse him at first, but he’ll get used to it. Move on to tying the lead, but still standing beside him. Next, stand a little farther away, so that he can see you but not so far away that you can’t reach out and reassure him or stop him if he becomes upset or tries to move. Once he remains calm after you move away, walk out of his sight for just a moment or two. Gradually build this to longer and longer periods of time. Your horse will soon quietly, waiting patiently for you to return. Standing quietly will also help you when it comes to grooming, cleaning hooves, or administering medical treatment.

Getting him walking beside you, allowing himself to be touched, and standing quietly are perhaps the three most important things you can teach your horse. Even if he is only ever going to serve as a pasture ornament, walking on a lead, tolerating touch, and standing still make vet care, grooming and other necessities of horse ownership so much easier and stress-free for both horse and master. Always remember to allow your horse to become accustomed to any new idea or item slowly, calmly, and for short amounts of time to start. You may never take the stakes, but a well-trained horse is a winner, hands down!

draft horse decals

Phil Wiskell asked:

When it comes to weekends at the rodeo, riders and their horses must be equally athletic. Particularly when it comes to the rodeo’s timed events - barrel racing, steer wrestling and calf roping - athleticism is essential. The success of the rodeo cowboy is measured as much by having the right horse, as it is by the cowboy’s athletic skills and timing.

In timed events, horses must be willing and able to respond well to their riders, make quick turns and be able to burst forward at full speed, when it is necessary to do so.

Because of their strong hind legs and muscular power, it is most often the American Quarter Horse that is used in rodeo events. Given that the American Quarter Horse got its name because the breed clocks the fastest quarter mile runs, it’s little wonder that, when it comes to timed events in the rodeo ring, Quarter Horses are used for barrel racing and steer wrestling and are considered to be great calf roping horses as well.

Calf roping horses aren’t just in the rodeo ring for their speed and precision; they play a greater role in the event as well. For those who are unfamiliar with calf roping, the event involves the calf roping horse, his rider and a calf. The roping horses are brought up to a full gallop; the rider throws the lasso around the calf and dismounts. The horse then backs up enough to keep tension on the rope while the rider ties the calf. When he returns to the horse, the rider mounts and the tension on the lasso rope is eased to determine whether or not the calf will remain tied.

Calf roping horses, therefore, not only need to be trained and athletic in order to work with the bursts of speed and sudden stops, but also they need to be able to respond well to their riders. The relationship that calf roping horses have with their riders is essential to the success that will be had during this exciting competitive event.

Therefore, when most riders look to buy a horse as a calf roping horse, temperament and intelligence are characteristics that most horse buyers are looking to find in a horse. Calf roping horses - as well as all American Quarter Horses that are going to be used on a ranch and in similar settings - should have a calm disposition, and they should be able to respond quickly to their riders and the situation where they are used.

As with shopping for most products, when you are looking at any horse, you’ll want to determine how you will be using the horse. Those who are going to be riding in rodeo events on a regular basis - in other words, a rider who will be taking his calf roping horses from one rodeo to another and competing as a professional athlete - will probably be looking at a horse differently than someone who intends to compete in only a few events during the year.

In other words, those who will be training their horses for a few weekend rodeos are more likely to be looking at American Quarter Horses that are not only adept in the rodeo ring, but that also are comfortable working throughout the week at the ranch. Of course, other individuals may be looking at calf roping horses that they have seen during rodeo events and may decide to choose a Quarter Horse as a cattle horse, solely for use on their own ranch without the intention of competing. Many ranchers find that the calf roping horse is well-trained and well-suited for average, everyday activities in the ranching business.

Of course, the right calf roping horse for one rider isn’t always going to be the right horse for another. When looking at horses for sale, if you are looking at Quarter Horses particularly for calf roping, it’s important to choose a horse that a good fit. In some cases, that will mean choosing a horse that’s solid and gentle and will be great for those who are learning the sport. In other cases, it will mean a taller horse, for others it will mean a shorter horse: it’s a matter of personal comfort and preference.

As always, you’ll want to be sure that the horse is in good health, that its legs and back are strong enough to carry your weight, and that the horse you choose either is already in great shape or can easily be conditioned for your chosen competitive sport or other use.

youtube draft horse
